Schrijver Harry Street (Gregory Peck) is gewond geraakt in Afrika. Het leven flitst aan hem voorbij. Zijn koortsige gedachten dwalen af naar zijn enige grote liefde Cynthia (Ava Gardner) die is overleden. Harry voelt zich schuldig dat hij zijn carrière boven haar geluk stelde. Ondanks zijn verwarde toestand is het zijn toegewijde vrouw Helen (Susan Hayward) die voor hem zorgt. Zij is er altijd voor hem. Ze stelt hem gerust en moedigt hem aan. Desondanks wacht Helen nog steeds op het moment dat Harry inziet dat wat hij nu heeft beter is dan wat hij kwijtgeraakt is.
